The Critic, my Jack Vettriano painting, was painted in 2008 and formed a trilogy of celebrity artwork of people whom I wanted to paint my “version” of. This is a comment on Jack Vettriano and the fact that some of the press who have critisised him are the very papers whose readers are likely to have Vettriano prints in their homes.
Vettriano has had to fight to have the recognition he deserves. Amongst art-snobs he is derided and brought down. Yet his art has brought pleasure to millions of art-lovers worldwide. It’s not just the simplicity of the way Jack Vettriano paints that I love, it’s his 40′s and 50′s style subject matter, the atmospheres he creates and the glorious way he elevates both men and women of the past into something almost legendary.
Vettriano is to be celebrated. If he was in the USA he would be a national hero.
