Female oil paintings are always very involving and exciting to work on. This is the first in a new series of paintings which I have been working on for a while. This series has been based on some sketches which I have produced (please see the art blog) and also some other ideas.
Initially, this was intended to be a celebrity painting but I altered the features somewhat. When I am working on female oil paintings, it seems that I work in batches, working on several female paintings simultaneously.
The theme of this series is concerned with women and war iconography. I have been listening to Kate Bush’s work, including Lionheart and Army Dreamers and it has heavily influenced not only what I have been painting, but the way in which I paint.
Oh! England, my Lionheart,
I’m in your garden, fading fast in your arms.
The soldiers soften, the war is over.
The air raid shelters are blooming clover.
Flapping umbrellas fill the lanes–
My London Bridge in rain again.
Oh! England, my Lionheart!
Peter Pan steals the kids in Kensington Park.
You read me Shakespeare on the rolling Thames–
That old river poet that never, ever ends.
Our thumping hearts hold the ravens in,
And keep the tower from tumbling.
Oh! England, my Lionheart!
Dropped from my black Spitfire to my funeral barge.
Give me one kiss in apple-blossom.
Give me one wish, and I’d be wassailing
In the orchard, my English rose,
Or with my shepherd, who’ll bring me home.
Many people are proud of their heritage and I am no different but when I listen to Kate Bush singing “Lionheart” it almost makes me want to be English!
“Lionheart” is framed in a hand painted quality hardwood frame with gold slip.
