Kilt paintings were originally created on canvas in acrylic and this was the medium of choice for these for several years. In 2009, during a period of working with oils again, I decided to produce a fairly major original painting in oil.
The “Kiltie” paintings produced before this, tended to be slightly humorous or tongue in cheek, with the exception of the “Timorous Beastie” canvases of 2009. “Thistles” was altogether more serious and contemplative.
Working on the canvas over several month, this artwork became a real passion to work on over summer and autumn 2010. The painting meandered as I chose different hues for the skin tones, kilt and background.
This original oil, is all about contemplation and being immersed in the things that life throws at us, ultimately triumphing after a necessary period of taking time to ourselves. Initially, I inted to feature thistles surrounding the figure but as the artwork progressed, I realised that this was not necessary.
