Despite Living in or near Glasgow for many years, I had never visited Glasgow Cathedral until 2009.
I spent quite a bit of time there on the day I visited and was really impressed by not just the architecture but also by the atmosphere of the building and it’s surroundings. There is something really Gothic about the buiding, even this is not the correct architectural term but it’s because the stonework is stained a jet black.
Inside there are vast open spaces and cosy vaults. It is a fantastic place. Outside, the Cathedral is surrounded by lamposts featuring Glasgow’s “Fish that wouldn’t swim, Bell that couldn’t ring and tree that wouldn’t grow”. All very negative sounding but fantastic all the same and featured in the painting which I created with the “fish” doubling for the moon.
