Kilt artwork designed to take the kiltie series of paintings a stage further. This artwork came about after working with a model who, whilst posing had told me about recovering from going through some rough life experiences. At the same time I had watched a documentary avout the highland clearances in Scotland. It really was a dark period in Scottish history, and although this is a modern painting, I know that the atmosphere of the artwork is influenced by my thinking at the time.
It is not all negative and this is sympolised by the strong left arm which forms the centre of this male figurative painting.
It was interesting to note the reaction to this painting at the time. The previous Kilt paintings had tended to be slightly humorous and this was a complete change of direction. This painting and several others which have been produced since have given me an interest in developing both my figure painting ability and also paintings featuring kilted figures.
