Art Exhibitions are funny things. They can be quite stressful. You work away in a studio for months and then you reveal your work to be scrutinised and criticised.
It’s over a year since I have taken part in this kind of exhibition. I chose this venue, Virginia Galleries in Glasgow as it is a new art gallery and I was also exhibiting with two other artist’s so it was less stress than a solo show. I have had a few solo shows in my career and they can be quite stressful. Will I have enough work to diplay? Will I meet the deadlines? Will the art be well received? Will anyone care enough to turn up? These are just some of the questions that artists ask themselves before a solo exhibition.
I have to say that today’s launch of the “painted Ladies” exhibition, was one of the more relaxed exhibition launches which I have been involved in. The two other artist’s were Kevin Polin and Wesley Edmund. Our work seemed to sit together well and I was delighted with the feedback. Most of the paintings I showed have been worked on over a period of five months and I was keen to hear what people had to say.
It was a holiday weekend and several people had got in touch to say that they would not make th elaunch but would visit afterwards. There were still a good number of people who came through the doors, all known to me as having followed my career in painting or subscribers to the newsletter. This meant a lot to me and I felt very supported: thank you all.
The exhibition runs until the 3rd of July, please visit the Virginia Gallery for a look if you are visiting Glasgow. You can see full detils in the Art News section of the website.
I am already working on other new paintings and I am also talking to new galleries with a view to having my work viewed again. It feels that I have had a year of working quietly in the studio and it is time to emerge again.
I would finish this blog entry by saying that after having met some vey unsavoury characters in the art scene, today it was great to address the balance and meet people who love art and are not negatively motivated. It was refreshing and uplifting.
