Landscape paintings are almost used by me as a means of relaxation. “In A Certain Light” was a happy accident. In between working on figurative paintings, I decided to clear my mind by working on this new landscape painting which was floating around in my head.
Normally, I work on canvas which is on stretchers. This has a certain amount of “give”. Working on canvas on board is a completely different experience, and it is this, together with the much smaller scale than I normally work which resulted in the soft, almost dream-like look to this artwork.

Painters are aware themselves of original artwork which they create which may mean more than certain other pieces. I feel that as far a landscape paintings go, this oil of rolling hills, countryside in shadow cast by passing clouds would never have come to be had it not been for the reasons described above, and also because it comes off the back of aseries of oil paintings which have been much more controlled than previous works. It therefore has me quite excited about exploring the look of this canvas and other recent landscape paintings, developing the ideas in them further.
