Possibly the longest title of any of my paintings but this Nietzsche quote sums up the feeling and thinking behind this canvas.
I am aware that “abstract” can be a misused term when it comes to describing original art, however, for the sake of classification on the web, “semi-abstract” seems as appropriate a term for this painting as any other.
This painting forms part of a new series of original paintings which feature facial elements and, without sounding too dramatic are about emerging from life events. They could be taken the other way, as in the faces are disappearing into the waves, or drowning, being immersed but this is not the idea of the paintings. They are about the exact reverse, about positivity, strength, resiliance and as Neitsche said, “that which does not kill us makes us stronger” (the title of the second painting in the series).
This painting has also been quite experimental in it’s execution and I have employed several techniques which are new to me. Like several other paintings I have been working on this year, these paintings take much longer to create than most of my previous artwork.
