There’s something about working on a Saturday that I just love. I don’t know if it’s because the studios are that bit quieter (I am a fan of quiet) but I seem to get 3 days painting done in one on a Saturday.
Atmosphere is all important. It’s interesting walking past other artist’s studios. There can be heard various sounds from classical music, either quietly or at full blast and then there was Nirvana at full pelt today too. The other thing I find interesting is that some artists have nothing on their door whilst I have an oversized sign saying “Joe Hendry”. I have a fair amount of visitors though and the last thing I need is people getting lost in WASPS Studios.
Some artists have small signs with their name but by far the best is Alasdair Wallace, who has a small print which looks like a small scale version of one of his paintings. It shows a blue sky with a tiny aeroplane dragging one of those long advertising banners behind it. On close inspection the banner reads in tiny letters “fuck off”. I guess Alasdair does not like to be disturbed.
Today I was switching between landscapes and figurative paintings. I am nearing completeion on several male paintings which I have been working on since last December. The landscapes are a restful thing to work on. The one shown above is a good example. This is quite a stylised painting for me and whether or not it remains as simple will be another matter.
The only downside of working at the weekend is that Cafe Sejuiced on the ground floor of the studios is not open. All the drinks are in the chiller tantalizingly looking out but there is a padlock on the door so it was water for me today as I had forgotten to bring any food or drink to tide me over. Thankfully a certain painter from the top floor came to my rescue with two slices of toast. Simple pleasures, painting, quiet and toast.
