Portrait Paintings
Portrait paintings are really exciting for me as an artist to work on. Over the years, even before I began to paint full time in 2005, I painted faces in various styles, experimenting and practicing different methods of drawing and applying paint.
In 2011, I painted some small scale face art on deep edged box canvas including John Lennon portrait paintings and following this was commissioned to paint a series by an art collector. The loose idea was to have a portrait of an individual face looking in different directions.
Over the past month or so, these “Small Faces” have been completely absobing and have become, in a way a practice for some large scale canvas ideas which I have had. The painting was created by building layers and I have some favourite portraits included in this. Middle row left has got me quite excited with regard to the way the paint has been applied and an artist friend commented that I seem to have found a new ” language” in my painting. I like the sound of this!
This is the first completed artwork of 2012 and I am looking forward to creating more large and small scale portrait paintings as the year progresses.
