Tree Spirits – Original Oil Painting

Tree Spirits is  an original oil painting which is influenced by my visits to Clava Cairns near Inverness, Scotland.

Clava is very close by Culloden Battle field and the whole area, not just Culloden has a historic feel to it.  As I have documented elsewhere on this website, it’s not just the Cairns at Clava, but the trees that create the unique atmosphere. I have visited when the landscape is bathed in sunshine and also when it has a veil of freezing mist and it is equally beautiful.

The tilte “Tree Spirits” refers to the fact that the trees, being so old have witnessed so much: I am not suggesting that the trees have a supernatural spirit as such.

This oil on canvas was created firstly in a dry layer and then with glazed top layers to create the effect I was looking to achieve. The colours are stong in certain areas and subtle and dark in others.
