Large Scale Drawings – To The Land Of Nod

Large Scale Drawings are something new for me. Having spent most of this year working on drawings which are betwen A4 and A3 size, this pices at A1 (23 x 33 inches) is the largest graphite artwork which I have drawn so far.

I wanted this artwork to evoke childhood memories. Although it is surreal in its nature, I don’t want it to be viewed particularly as menacing or scary. It is all about that childhood transitional time between being awake and sleeping. I think of my daughter as I look at this artwork. Getting her to bed could be a struggle. As a child I could easily be tempted to climb the stairs if there was the chance of being read a story or, as I got a bit older, being aloud to read a book for a while. One of the books I looked at as a child was “A Treasury Of Nursery Rhymes”, illustrated by Hilda Boswell (I still have it some 40 years on). In it, the poem, “Winken, Blinken & Nod” was illustrated by a huges glowing moon and since then, the moon has always had a sleep connection for me.

Origianal Artwork is Graphite and carbon on A1 paper .
