Figurative art, Scottish painting artist Joe Hendry paints in his Glasow Studio original art and Limited Edition Prints available
In 2007 I decided to paint a male figure wearing a kilt. I was pleased with the painting but not ready for the reaction it received. The first kilt painting sold almost immediately it arrived in the gallery.
Since then, I hve continued to paint Kilted figures, both male and female figurative art and sometimes with a dog or cat thrown in as requested.
At the time of writing, I hope to develop this theme and continue to do justice to this much loved subject. What may at first just have appeared to be a painting of a “Man In A Kilt” has opened up a whole aea of study for me from the Highland Clearances to the yardage and pleating of a kilt to the geometry of tartan design and Clan culture.

New Figurative male Kilt Art for 2010. This painting has been quite exciting to work on both from the execution and also there has been a cross over from the current Goddess paintings.
This painting also had more of the facial features showing than the previous two. This has been a slightly challenging concept for me as I was advised early in my painting career not to show facial features as generally, viewers of the artwork do not like this unless it is a portrait of someone familiar to them.
This painting was an early signature piece
and as some other paintings from the time,
it definitely shows my design background.
I still have a soft spot for modern high
impact artwork and this was a bit of
an attention grabber.
A new take on the kiltie and dog theme. This painting is partially autobiographical.
Bringing humour into artwork is something which I like to do now and then, however, the humour should not mean a sacrifice in the painting technique and this canvas I believe, on inspection demonstrates a continued development in my painting.
Bursting with colour, this new, defined, “Kiltie” art is one of a series. I try to bring something new to these paintings and progress them naturally. Thanks go to James, the man in the kilt who modelled for a series of new paintings, including this canvas.
The very nature of kilts has meant that in the past, there has been more of an emphasis on male kilt art. That is changing with some new paintings which I am working on: this is the first artwork in the female series. This painting is hopefully subtly erotic art with a hint of fun.
