Surreal Drawing – Alice In Wonderland ? Surreal drawing has never really been my “thing”. When I was (much) younger, it was probably something that I was more into and impressed by but over the past few years my artwork has had a much more real and natural basis. This is not to say that the surreal is not something I can enjoy. I love Salvador Dali and...
Learn MoreLife Drawing Experiences Life drawing is a discipline which is invaluable for artists. I have found in the past seven years since turning pro that it is something that many artists, surprisingly, shy away from. I am guilty of this at times. Working on specific projects and the ease of using your own models together with photography can overtake. This is all well and good...
Learn MoreYoung Gallery – Young Artists Young Gallery is the name of a new Imapct Arts project in the East end of Glasgow. Impact Arts secure funding for various projects in Glasgow which benifit local communities. I was approached by them recently as an artist local to the new project and asked to open the first exhibition. I was very flattered by this: I have been involved...
Learn MoreArt Print Shop – Now Online Tonight I put the finishing touches to the new online Print and Drawing store which I have been working on. I was supposed to have been at the launch of the 28 Drawings Later exhibition but as I have (again!) been a bit under the weather I was disappointed at having to give it a miss. I had no intention of taking part in 28 Drawings...
Learn MoreGlasgow Cathedral Paintings Glasgow Cathedral paintings have been created by me on previous occasions. I first painted the Cathedral as it is a wonderful place to visit – I adore it. I have to say that Glasgow Council have done a good job of the whole Cathedral Square. It is steeped in atmosphere with the Oldest House In Glasgow (Provands Lordship), St Mungo’s...
Learn MorePainting Demonstrations are usually nerve wracking but great fun too. I recently gave a demo at the Eastwood Art Club in Glasgow. A landscape with a bright colour palette was created in less than two hours. the painting needs a little more work and will be shown on this website soon.
Learn MoreDrawing & Sketching – 28 Drawings Later Drawing and sketching, especially sketchbooks form an important part of inquiry in the process for most artists creating new artwork. For me, this was something I fell away from. When I was very young, I always seemed to be drawing (where did all that drawing go?). When I was studying design, sketchbooks were as important...
Learn MoreArt therapy in it's simplest form. Pencil drawing has been a real help, along with the wonderful music of Rachel Portman as this artist tries to work through a twisted and very painful knee. Pencil drawing is suited to sitting in the one place and creating this graphite on paper sketch of my neice is the latest in a new series of drawings.
Learn MoreGlasgow Art Club – Marketing Seminar Glasgow Art Club has in the past had the reputation in some artists’ circles as being a bit “old school” and “up itself” to use arather direct term. I know some of the artists who are members but I have never really thought all that much about the group, which is actually a registered charity (this...
Learn MoreDebbie Harry pencil drawing on paper discussed in addition to the experience of painting demonstrations in front of an art club.
Learn MoreGlasgow art exhibitions seem to be thick on the ground at the moment, no doubt witht the approach of Christmas. Following on the heels of the WASPS Open Studios last month, the Parade Artists group at tthe studios where I am based are joining in the forthcoming multitude of Glasgow art exhibitions and we are holding an event which spans two weekends at tthe end of...
Learn MoreNew Art – Well, New To Me New art has been coming along in the studio in between various events over the past few months. As we head in to the silly season, an d I do find it very silly indeed, I find that it has traditionally become a time for me to press on with developing my work whilst the studios are a bit quieter. New art in a new month meant of course the...
Learn MoreBoxing Art Boxing art has been a subject I return to now and again. There’s something quite arresting about a boxing image, as if just by looking at it you might get punched in the face. I like any artwork that creates a more intense emotion in the viewer. This one was started almost a year ago. He is oil on board and went all around the houses as I changed the...
Learn MorePainting, Christopher Hitchens & Other News Painting has ceased for a while and it’s more than three weeks since I have blogged -after a second email asking me what I was up to, was I still painting, and so I thought it was time I got typing. Blogging, like painting, goes through fits and starts and I have still been painting away in the background whilst not...
Learn MoreNew Art – New Faces New art has been on my mind, I think it comes with the territory with a new year. Over the holiday period I was painting several days. If you have read elsewhere the way in which I create artwork, then you will know that I paint on several canvases simultaneously. I love painting this way, I don’t know if this is a method of aleviating...
Learn MoreDavid Hockney Tree Art David Hockney was on the main News the other evening: which I thought was interesting. It made a change from all the current doom and gloom and it’s not all that often that the likes of David Hockney appear on current news programmes. Hockney was described as the “greatest living British artist” which immediately took me back too...
Learn MorePencil Drawings – Back to Basics Pencil drawings took up a lot of my time as a teenager. In fact, after being forced to study German at School, I rebelled by sitting sketching in my languages class for two years. I have regretted that a couple of times when visiting Colone howver and having to make flapping movements at taxi drivers whilst shouting...
Learn MoreIt can be difficult for artists to return to the canvas after working towards a big event or an enforced break. Also discussed here: why does this website keep changing its appearance?
Learn MoreThis years Open Studios at WASPS in Glasgow is now over and what a weekend it was. After a slow start because of the rain it was non stop and I loved every minute of it. Lots of artwork left my studio, which is greatly appreciated. On a sad note however, The Open Studios weekend was to be the last for Cafe Sejuiced which had to close its doors once the weekend was over.
Learn MoreWASPS Open Studios only happens once per year but it is a hugely involving event for all the artists taking part. Every year we seem to reinvent the wheel and in this post I discuss some of the thinking behind this years open studios and why we have done some things slightly differently. WASPS Open Studios in Hanson Street, Glasgow is on 1st and 2nd October 2011.
