ART BLOG ARCHIVE - JANUARY 2008

Emotional Boxer

  • · Mood:  Contemplative
  • · Music:  Kate Bush

Yesterday was one of those “Murphy’s Law” days when evrything that could go wrong did go wrong in quick succession!

What better way to get such a day kicked into touch than grab a big canvas and some big brushes and just go for it!

“Normal” art will be resumed as soon as possible.

Cheers

More Big Hair Art

  • · Mood:  Cookin!
  • · Music:  Tubeway Army

I don’t paint on a Saturday but circumstances allowed me to get into the studio for a few hours today.

The best place for me on a wet Saturday afternoon.

Also a chance to get on with the next in my “girl with flowing hair series” which I am teally enjoying painting at the moment.

Can you believe that January is almost over....time flies :-)

Fame and Pink Stripey Ties

  • · Mood:  Chilled
  • · Music:  Roisin Murphy

I rounded this week up by working on another new “girl with flowing hair” piece and also this small oil painting of a tie.

The idea came after seeing an image on the net and I thought I would produce my own small version of it.

My artist friend Frank To has a solo exhibition opening in Dundee tomorrow. Good luck Frank!

Not that Frank will need it, his most recent claim to fame was being asked by a fellow shopper to autograph an article on him in this moth’s Homes and Interiors magazine whilst browsing in Borders .....now that’s fame!

What A Difference Two Days Make

  • · Mood:  Painterly
  • · Music:  Blondie

My new female art work has been progressing over the past couple of days and I have really enjoyed working on it. I have been reading about the psychology of “flow”. This is when you loose yourself in something and time passes before you know it. This is how it has been with this piece of art.

Also, because of the way it looks and the thought process behind it, I think I may just call her “Flow”.

Unless anyone reading this has any better ideas?

All email suggestions appreciated!

Best Regards

Joe

Girl Art

  • · Mood:  Happy as can be :-)
  • · Music:  Roisin Murphy

I enjoy painting almost every piece that I paint but every now and then I REALLY get into something. This piece has got me looking forward to going into the studio again tomorrow.
I can see in my head how the finished piece will look....watch this space!

Cheers

Studio Assistant

  • · Mood:  Happy
  • · Music:  Kylie, X

This has been quite a varied week and today rounded things off nicely.

This afternoon, I had the company of a young lady who is interested in art and wanted to spend some time painting with me.

Jessie, you were a pleasure to have in the studio. Thanks for cleaning all my brushes so expertly and I have to say that I think your portrait was superb!

Girl Art

  • · Mood:  Content
  • · Music:  Radio 4!

Today I had an earlier start in the studio than normal.

One of these days when the light is poor but the mood can be quite nice when it is raining outside.

I spent a bit more time on this new painting which is far removed from the “pop art” of last wee but I am really enjoying playing around with loose brush strokes again.

Can you believe it’s almost Friday again?

No Blue Art here

  • · Mood: Cheery
  • · Music: Kylie, X

Ok, no criticism for listening to Kylie....I don’t do pop snobbery never mind pop art snobbery!

As a friend said recently, the new Kylie album X sounds more like Goldfrapp than Goldfrapp do. Fantastic :-)

What would I do without music in the studio? This week I have, as always been working on various pieces but this artwork has been uppermost in my mind.

One of these ones when I don’t know when to stop but I thing we will leave it at “Not So Blue”.

Big Art

  • · Mood: Fairly chilled
  • · Music: Paris Malcolm McLaren

Back in the studio after a really nice weekend.

I don’t know if this painting has been influenced by the residue of the weekend’s partying or the fact that I was listening to Malcolm McLaren’s Paris abum today.

Specifically the Revenge Of The Flowers track. It really seemed to get into my head today and just made it’s way to the canvas.

It is thoroughly enjoyable working on this piece....more to come soon.

Big Art

  • · Mood: Energetic
  • · Music: Moby

Today was one of those days when, after a week of painting quite controlled pieces, I just had to loosen up a bit.

Luckily, I had a large scale canvas handy and just went for it!

To be honest, I don’t really know where this is going but sometimes in the past I have gone off in a new direction with my art by beginning a painting this way.

I am off to a dinner party tonight and looking forward to it: a good weekend to you all...

Girls and Flowers

  • · Mood: Relaxed
  • · Music: Still Replicas, Tubeway Army

If you have been following my blog (see the bottom of this page), you will have seen the oil painting which I began last month.

It has been progressing and I thought it might be time for another look.

The skin tone has lightened, I am working on detail in the hair an......flowers have appeared.

I have nevere really painted florals but I thought white lilies might bring something new to this piece of art.

More art commissions

  • · Mood: :-)
  • · Music: Still Replicas, Tubeway Army

Today I had a visit to the dental hospital. Apparently my teeth are moving! Nothing to worry about apparrently and this is “common in older patients” I was informed by the orthodontist who looked about 12. So this is what being in your forties is like?

Up to the studio after that where belive it or not, there are many artists who are even older than I am!

I am working on several pieces at once and today I thought I would display an art commission which i finished recently. Last year, I produced a large canvas of my friend Allison sitting next to the Bishop monument at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. It was acrylic and this new version was in oil and also smaller scale.

Back in the studio tomorrow....

Numan Art

  • · Mood: :-)
  • · Music: Replicas, Tubeway Army

As the year gets underway, in addition to working on some new commissions, I have been a tad self indulgent.

Being a long-time Numan fan and fairly spurred on by the forthcoming Replicas Tour in March, I have been working on a piece of Numan Art in oil.

Gary Numan has to be one of the most misunderstood musicians of our time. Everyone thinks of the singles which hit the top of the charts in the early eighties but there is so much more to him than that as a listen to album tracks will prove.

There’s nothing like Numan and nothing like those rip-your-heart-out synths...roll on March!

Happy New Year

  • · Mood: Relaxed
  • · Music: None today

Firstly, all the best for 2008 to you.

I look back on 2007 as a year when my art career moved forward at quite a pace. Thanks to everyone for all their support and custom and a special thanks to Park Gallery in Glasgow.

I am excied about 2008: The end of January marks my 3rd year as a professional artist and although I have some ideas in my head....who knows what the year ahead will bring.

I am still battling my usual Christmas flu (I hope you managed to avoid it!) and until I get back to the studio, here’s another Christmas Art commission, this time of Marc Almond.
