For some time, I have been interested on working on this theme again and in between painting figurative artwork, I have been painting the largest landscape which I have worked on. Many of these tree paintings have been inspired by places I knew when I was a child.
I am repeatedly drawn back to painting trees. This painting which makes use of gold and silver paints and inks is quite a dearture from other paintings which I am currently working on.
I continued the Tree lined perspective paintings in 2009 with this landscape which has a more natural colur palette than previous landscape artwork. The perspective in this painting was more evident and as the canvas was a reasonable size, I really wanted to make it feel that you could walk right into the painting.
The whole place has a wonderful feeling and the trees are simply wonderful. I have visited Clava many times and I have painted three Clava based artworks. I hope to paint more.
One of the most dramatic places I have visited is Neist Point Lighthouse on the truly beautiful isle of Skye. The sunsets are unbelievable and when I returned, I knew that I would have to turn my experience into a painting.
This artwork formed a series of large scale paintings based on treeline perspectives and a lively colour palette. This particular artwork was developed over a period of months with underpainting techniques which I had began to use for the first time in landscape painting.
Loch Lomond Hills was painted after driving through the area and having to stop the car to get out and take in the view. The light was so unusual and the atmosphere was intense. I tried to capture the calmnes and bright hills but dark skies of the landscape in this painting. It was by chance that I drove this way over the hills from Helensburgh to Loch Lomond as there was a diversion or this artwork may never have been painted.
This autumnal landscape painting formed part of a painting demonstration at Park Gallery, Glasgow in summer 2009. It is one of a series of landscape paintings which I worked on that year.
This artwork is an atmospheric acrylic on what has become a standard large scale canvas for me to paint on. This painting is based on a photograph taken near the Clyde on a mist filled morning.
This painting, in oil, was worked on over the period of over a year. It is based on the view from a friends cottage. Being a city dweller, there is something about being in the country which definately makes my shoulders drop. This artwork, in addition to being all about space and the simplicity of a countryside landscape, is about the dramatic light.
