Approaching Autumn

Approaching Autumn landscape art is the latest in my series of artworks created using coloured pencils.

As I have discussed before, I have tried to develop my landscapes more towards evoking an emotional response. This has been achieved in previous paintings by using more impressionistic techniques. In this new landscape, i have used colour variance to do this.

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year. This artwork was created in early autumn as the leaves are beginning to turn.

Beach Art

A Tranquil Place

Beach art in coloured pencil, “A Tranquil Place” sums up how I feel about being on a beach. This feeling is at almost any time of the year, not just on a sunny day.

People often use the phrase “connecting with nature”. For me, this is probably strongest whilst strolling along a beach.

This beach art is one of the first in a new series of coloured pencil artworks. Although these are very time-consuming to create, I enjoy the process. I also enjoy the depth of colour and variance in textural qualities of coloured pencil.

Coloured Pencil Art

This landscape artwork is created in coloured pencil.

I have been working on landscpaes for several years now and more recently have been endeavouring to develop the emotional aspect of my landscapes in even the simpler pieces.

This landscape was interesting to work on as I have been trying out media new to me, namely, coloured pencil.

This gives a different overall feel to the artwork.

Cumulus

Cumulous Cloud Art

Cumulus cloud art has been a year in the making. The underpainting on this almost inch-thick board was prepared a year before the top layer of painting was applied.

Using a slightly different palette, various brush techniques were employed in this tall landscape painting.

Clouds have always fascinated me and I njoy painting skyscapes. A few years ago I discovered that there is actually a Cloud Appreciation Society, which may sound slightly eccentric but I do understand why people are so fascinated by the sky and the incredible atmospheres created above us.

“Cumulus” is part of a pair of paintings created on   blocks of wood and measuring approximately 8 x 14 inches. Working on the hard surface is very different from painting on canvas and allows for quite different character in the painting.

Emotional Landscape

Emotional Landscape

Emotional Landscape No 1

Emotional landscape is a term more commonly used figuratively. However, I have spoken frequently about the emotional aspect I have tried to achieve in my landscape art . When it came to this large scale oil, it seemed appropriate.

The challenge here was not to analyse too much or be too literal during the painting process. If you are familiar with the progress of my painting throughout the years, you might understand whythis was quite difficult.

The temptation to keep painting , to add more  tree-like elements was strong. I resisted and went with the flow, using colour and texture instead.

Treelined – Landscape Painting

Treelined landscape painting

Treelined

Landscape Oil Painting

Treelined was an interesting canvas to paint. At quite a large scale of nearly 3 x 3 feet, it allowed me some scope to experiment with new brush strokes.

The painting has three distinct areas, the grass in the foreground, the trees with the bright sky in the background and the upper layer of the sky.

I have been striving to create more emotion in my landscape paintings over the past few years and I like the emotion that this painting evokes. It may be a cliche to talk about being transported in your mind to somewhere else by a piece of artwork but I think that this is one of the “jobs” of a piece of art and I like the feeling I get from this piece.

Sometimes, I like to show how the artwork looks framed: it really does finish a painting off. Everyone has different taste in frames. Personally, I like plain and simple. The landscape is currently framed in a hand-painted wooden frame with gold effect slip.

Scottish Field

Scottish Field Landscape Painting

Scottish Field is a simple little painting at first glance but the sky area of the artwork had some quite heavy underpainting which becomes evident upon further examination.

This small scale artwork was a part of a series of paintings which were all about emotional landscapes and things which are triggered in my mind just by the word “landscape”.

Much of my painting is influenced by childhoods growing up living on the edge of a town which was surrounded by fields and this piece is all about the drama, even on a day when the sun is not shining.

Some of these smaller paintings go on to influence larger artworks and Scottish Field is very likely to do that because of the way in which it was constructed and the resulting atmosphere of the artwork.
