Approaching Autumn

Approaching Autumn landscape art is the latest in my series of artworks created using coloured pencils.

As I have discussed before, I have tried to develop my landscapes more towards evoking an emotional response. This has been achieved in previous paintings by using more impressionistic techniques. In this new landscape, i have used colour variance to do this.

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year. This artwork was created in early autumn as the leaves are beginning to turn.

Coloured Pencil Art

This landscape artwork is created in coloured pencil.

I have been working on landscpaes for several years now and more recently have been endeavouring to develop the emotional aspect of my landscapes in even the simpler pieces.

This landscape was interesting to work on as I have been trying out media new to me, namely, coloured pencil.

This gives a different overall feel to the artwork.

Treelined – Landscape Painting

Treelined landscape painting

Treelined

Landscape Oil Painting

Treelined was an interesting canvas to paint. At quite a large scale of nearly 3 x 3 feet, it allowed me some scope to experiment with new brush strokes.

The painting has three distinct areas, the grass in the foreground, the trees with the bright sky in the background and the upper layer of the sky.

I have been striving to create more emotion in my landscape paintings over the past few years and I like the emotion that this painting evokes. It may be a cliche to talk about being transported in your mind to somewhere else by a piece of artwork but I think that this is one of the “jobs” of a piece of art and I like the feeling I get from this piece.

Sometimes, I like to show how the artwork looks framed: it really does finish a painting off. Everyone has different taste in frames. Personally, I like plain and simple. The landscape is currently framed in a hand-painted wooden frame with gold effect slip.

Landscape Oil Painting

Landscape Oil Painting

“British Summertime”

Landscape oil painting in a slightly different format for me. The underpainting on this artwork was started a year before the final layers were applied.

This landscape painting started out somewhat as an experiment. Firstly in the application of the paint and also as it is painted on a slab of wooden board. This board is over half an inch thick.

Like most of the landscapes I paint now, I strive for atmosphere rather than There is something about the elements of this artwork that appeal to me. I would like to take these ideas forward and work into future artworks.

As a homage to our famous British summertime, this landscape oil painting reflects the drama of our skies. Also the fact that in the UK just craning your head from left to right can allow you to see four seasons almost simultaneously.

Glasgow Cathedral Art Print No 3

Glasgow Cathedral Art Prints

Glasgow Cathedral art has been created by me a couple of times and you can read my thoughts about Glasgow Cathedral in the blog section of the website. At the end of 2011 I was commissioned to create a painting for St Kentigerns School in New Zealand.

Initially the brief was to paint using a colourful palette. This was changed and the pallette became more subdued (this painting is also illustrated on the website).

The feedback on the colourful painting received such a positive response that I have made it available as a print.

The painting progressed and was completed in more subdued tones and this Version, is available as a linited Edition print.

Kilt Paintings

Scottish Kilt Art

Man In A Kilt Art

“Scot’s Pine”

Kilt paintings were something which, around the time of beginning to paint “Scot’s Pine” were becoming something of a double-edged sword. Man In A Kilt Art was beginning to take over!

I had noticed when I first started to paint, that people really like to pigeonhole the artist’s work. This changed for me over time. At first as being known for producing paintings of legs. Then celebrity art, after my artwork appeared in two books.  In 2007, Man In A Kilt Art. I loved painting the kilties. I’ve learned much about figure drawing and painting whilst producing them. It seemed that after that point, it was all that was expected from me. After a few years I stopped kilt paintings for a while. This however was not what I wanted to do either. So I returned to the subject but for me, in a more serious fashion. I love the humour of “The Answer Is” and “Wee Jock” etc. However, I realised that there would be more to kilt paintings if I investigated further.

Meaning

This painting, created in 2009 is to date, the largest figurative painting which I have ever worked on at 6 feet x 3 feet.  There were challenges in working at that scale to keep the figures in proportion but as the canvas progressed I really became absorbed in it. I was mindful of both of the models and what they were going through in their lives and this canvas became all about close relationships and being together, even when we are apart, hence the title “Scot’s Pine”.

The moon/sun elements are to do with the distance between people who can gaze upwards and look at the same objects in the sky even though they are miles apart. There is also a nod to Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” in the painting of the sky.
